Beijing Olympic Games Upsets 2008 – Fastest Woman on Earth 100-Meter Gold Medalist Shelly-Ann Fraser
The Jamaican track and field team had planned to shake up the Beijing Olympics long before they set foot in Beijing, China. Jamaica tasted the sweetness of their first women’s Olympic gold medal courtesy of Veronica Campbell-Brown at the 2004 Sydney Olympics. The 2008 Beijing Olympics marked the moment to go further in that first medal female gold.
Shelly-Ann Fraser has always wanted to run. His mother shared on a TV show a key point that may have marked the start of his passionate focus on professional racing. It was when she was in elementary school. She was ready to run a race but didn’t hear the whistle, so she was the last person out of the starting blocks and arrived last.
Crying and upsetting her mother reminded her that she could achieve anything she had in mind with God’s help and she just had to keep working hard to achieve her dreams.
Shelly-Ann and her mother go to church regularly and Shelly-Ann had her whole church congregation on her side. They live in Waterhouse, one of Jamaica’s most difficult and politically divided ghettos.
In fact, two of the three Jamaican finalists hail from inner-city Jamaican communities. In her two television interviews after the Olympic 100 meter race, Shelly-Ann Fraser’s mother urged Jamaican parents to “take care of the children, they are the future”.
Shelly-Ann’s Waterhouse community and Jamaicans in Jamaica and around the world tuned in to watch the Olympic 100 meter sprint in Beijing. Usain Bolt’s victory over 100 meters had already made Jamaica the home of “the fastest man in the world”. Expectations for Jamaica to win the title of ‘world’s fastest woman’ were raging.
We were not disappointed ! Shelly-Ann Fraser’s 100-meter gold clocked a time of 10.78. Sherone Simpson and Kerron Stewart are tied at 10.98.
It is the first time a Jamaican has won the women’s 100m sprint and the first time in the history of the Olympics that there has been a silver tie in the event. It is also the first time that a country has won the “world’s fastest woman” 1-2-2 event!
