‘Scooch’ Off to AC

A major piece of the puzzle involving the transformation of the Stardust Hotel and Casino into a $4 million megaresort fell into place on Monday when the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that Director of Races and Athletics Bob Scucci would join soon to be former boss Joe Lupo at the Borgata Hotel Casino in Atlantic City.

Scucci, one of Nevada’s most influential bookmakers, has confirmed he will be leaving on June 1 to become Borgata’s relationship marketing director.

“I’m excited about this possibility,” Scucci told the RJ. “It’s a huge promotion for me. Opportunities like this only come around once in your career.”

Scucci took over the reins of Stardust in 2002.

The Stardust has long been the “home of the Las Vegas line”, although the offshore books have stolen some of its thunder in recent years.

The RJ quoted Roobert Walker, who runs betting operations for MGM Mirage and previously worked at Stardust, as saying “the landscape is going to change dramatically” without Scucci at the helm of Stardust.

The merger of Boyd Gaming and Coast Casinos has led to speculation about how the future Echelon Place might handle sports betting operations.

Scucci, a New Jersey native and USC graduate, has worked at Boyd Gaming for 15 years.

He noted that he expects the popular Stardust Invitational football handicap contest and Stardust Line radio show to continue. No indication has been given who will replace Scucci in the final seven months of 2006.

“Scooch”, as he is known in sports gaming circles, is a rabid sports enthusiast who can’t wait to be a true fan again.

“Sometimes it’s hard to enjoy a great game when you have hundreds of thousands of dollars on it,” he told the RJ.
