What Qualities Make Up a Good Thrower?
What are the qualities of a good pitcher? There are several qualities that make a good pitcher, these being; speed, strength, aggression, grace, coordination, hard work and dedication. The last being one of the most important, as a good pitcher one must have the drive and determination to ask questions, as well as the drive and enthusiasm to learn and study the event on its own.
Speed and force can go hand in hand since they are relative. The more strength one can have, the greater the ability to develop speed through various exercises (sprints, lifts and technique). Velocity in throwing events is both horizontal and vertical (by linear, rotational and vertical forces). For example, in the hammer, the stronger the athlete, the more force and speed he can apply to the hammer. In a linear sense, when the athlete moves the ball forward in the first winds and turns in the circle, the athlete accelerates the ball horizontally through rotational and linear movements. After understanding the horizontal forces, one must understand the vertical force in the hammer, and this is shown with the orbit of the ball through the circle.
While moving the ball into orbit, a 16 pound hammer can produce a ground reaction force in excess of 700 pounds, this is where the force comes in, since the hammer is now exerting a large force on the thrower . A force of 700 pounds that is placed on the ground (Ground Reaction Force) must have an equal force that will be in the opposite direction, so the greater the speed and force you place on the downward hammer ball , the more the athlete than to generate the same force in the opposite or upward direction (Newton’s third law of motion). To benefit from this, the trigger angle of the hammer must be optimal. Thus, by accelerating the hammer throughout the circle, the athlete gains speed. The shape of the orbit, by having both a high point and a low point, creates a great force due to the accelerating nature that velocity places on the ball as it travels up and down. If the athlete cannot control both speed and force in this event, then the attempt is futile.
A second quality that is important to look for while trying to find and develop a good pitcher is aggression and the ability to exploit it under the right circumstances. In throwing events, you would like to develop your senses to produce a large amount of throwing reaction, however, you must be aware of the anxiety that is also produced and learn how to overcome it. Aggressiveness is also beneficial for a thrower because hopefully the athlete will show an interest and eagerness to get into the circle and want to throw every day. A pitcher who has this drive and desire will be a great pitcher, because the more you invest in an event, the more you will get out of it. In the first form of aggression which involved the athlete’s ability to be aggressive in competitive situations, it is important to understand how to exploit this for throwing.
In throwing events, one must use their speed and agility as mentioned earlier, in order to produce better payoffs in the event. The higher the gear or gear placed on the tool the farther it will travel, this also has to do with the clearance angle; however, a pitcher will not approach pitches passively if wins wish to be achieved. The second form of aggression comes into play during an athletic meet; this form of aggressiveness gives the athlete the vision of victory. However, with this aggressiveness comes the need to be in control, otherwise the aggressive attitude will get the better of the athlete. Emotional control of the athlete will raise the level of anxiety to a positive level in which the athlete can perform positively. By envisioning the perfect throw or throwing sequence, the athlete can then perform a track encounter in their head and prepare to throw and enter the circle aggressively. The vision of the throw will be discussed in the next paragraph.
The final attribute that makes a track and field athlete a good pitcher is the willingness to learn the event and to become a student of the art. By becoming a student of the event, the athlete chooses to make athletics a way of life. By having such an understanding of the throws, the individual can provide the coach with much-needed information that may be lacking from an observational perspective. The athlete becomes a student of the event by learning outside of practice, learning about the subject through books, videos, magazines, newspapers and first-hand experiences. The ability to provide such feedback to the coach is important because coaches may need to know how a throw felt, so that corrections can take place. Also, by studying the event, the athlete can become aware of the feeling of a perfect throw, as mentioned before, however, this time both in reality and through visualization, which can help to emotional control. The athlete can be a student, enthusiastically participating in training; this is achieved by listening to the coach, watching other athletes perform the task, and questioning and challenging the coach in a curious way that can benefit both athlete and coach.
In conclusion to reading this chapter, we can see that there are many qualities that make a good pitcher. One quality alone is not enough to make a thrower an exceptional thrower, however, all of these qualities working together will benefit the athlete, the coach and the program. As stated, the athlete should not just rely on speed, because strength must also be involved, nor should the athlete just rely on being a student of the sport because he may think too much about the throwing and losing the aggressive behavior needed in these events. Finally, if the coach can help the athlete encapsulate all of these qualities in their experience, both athlete and coach will see success. Be honest, set goals (short and long), visualize and work hard, a pitcher with these qualities will go far.
