Bra Fit – Do’s and Don’ts
Finding a bra that really fits you seems like an impossibility most of the time. Either you fall from the top or bottom of the cap, or you get stung by frames that look like they were designed by a torturer from the Spanish Inquisition! No one can design a good bra?! Yes and no. In this article, we cover the do’s and don’ts of a good bra fit.
Is there a perfect bra on the market? Sorry but no. The bra industry is so messy it’s hard to know where to start talking about it. Do you realize that brands can’t even agree on how to measure size? Some think the waist band should be married to the upper part of the breasts, while others think it should be just below them. Add in the different sizing calculations by European and American manufacturers and it’s pretty amazing that bras fit all.
How bad are things with bra sizes? A study in the UK focused on why women undergo breast reduction surgery. Do you know what they found? The reason was back and neck pain. Further examination revealed that the problem was not breast size or weight, but that all 102 women in the study were wearing the wrong size bra!
Given this mess, how can we be expected to find the right bra for our body types? In these modern times, the sad answer is that trial and error is pretty much the only way to achieve a professional fit. With that in mind, here are some do’s and don’ts for getting the best fit.
The number one problem with fitting a bra is the band size. The band around the bottom of the bra should provide most of the support. This means getting the right fit is essential. The tape should go just under your breasts, then continue at the same height all the way around your trunk and down your back. The band should not be higher on your back than on your front. Also, the band should fit snugly around your trunk, but not so tight that it causes you discomfort or breathing problems.
The second fit issue that most women get wrong is with cups. Women with larger breasts tend to have undersized cups. Women with smaller breasts tend to go in the opposite direction. The cup should fit snugly around your breasts. If there are gaps, you need a smaller size. On the other hand, if you “overflow” the edge of the cups anywhere, you are wearing a size that is too small. Choose the right cup size and you’ll have a much more comfortable bra.
Nothing is as annoying as being bitten by underwired bras. Well, the sting should be a sign. If you get stung in the arm, the bracelet size is too small. Go up one size. If you get stung in the chest or inside the armpit area, the band size is too big. Try going down a size and see if that helps. If you get your ass stuffed, you’re either having way too much fun or you don’t know how to wear a bra!
If you can achieve these three basic areas with your bra, you’ll have a better fit than the vast majority of women. You might also notice back and neck pain and headaches that suddenly go away.
