Tips on Wearing Thigh Length Stockings
Thigh high stockings have a lot of appeal. Here are some tips for choosing the right thigh stocking for you.
The garter belt. Thigh highs are intriguing because of the way they are held together. There’s more than one way to hold thigh highs: garter belts are one of them. While garter belts are now a sign of excess and sexual seduction, they started out as purely useful – to hold thigh-high stockings in place. They have four or six straps with metal clasps at their ends to hook onto the top of your stockings. Use a six-strap garter belt. This will try to hold the stocking more firmly if you are wearing sewn stockings, creating a straight line with the back seam. Briefs are normally worn over the garter belt just for convenience.
Many have seen the throwing of the garter take place at weddings. It’s not a garter belt. This device is intended to be slipped over the stockings at thigh level to hold it to the leg. Do you know why blue garters are worn at weddings? This is due to the old tradition of “Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue…” and thus led to the usually blue garters at weddings. There is a lack of modesty because the garter is removed and then thrown on drunken bachelors… but hey, you have to love tradition!
Elastics. It is common for thigh-style stockings to have a silicone inseam along the top (usually covered by lace) to keep them in contact with the leg. How comfortable these elastic bands fit depends in part on the shape of your leg. These bands can sometimes become uncomfortable and damp from sweat. The grip may be tight, but people with sensitive skin will experience some irritation.
The type of heel and toe: There are usually options available for the heel and toe to be reinforced in stockings – a stronger heel extends the life of the stocking but is not the first choice for shoes that expose the heel or toe. They’re not exactly sexy either.
Here is a list of heel and toe style options in shoes. Sandlefoots don’t have a visible toe, but the downside is that they aren’t reinforced and can tear or wear out more easily. When you wear open-toed shoes, you should choose this type of bottom.
Cuban-inspired heel. This has a darker heel piece that is square at the top of the heel.
A Grench heel is not only attractive but very sexy, it has a pointed and reinforced heel area. Positioning the sewn stockings takes some practice so that the top point of the mid-heel of the shoe meets the seam and runs up the back of the leg snugly.
Half-toe or half-toe. A stocking that has a reinforced toe that has 50 percent of the reinforcement on the top of the toe and then on the bottom of the foot.
Fabrics. You can get waders in a wide variety of materials: nylon, silk, wool, and even cashmere. The stretch of the bottom depends on the material used. Stockings that don’t stretch are very different from the ones we are used to wearing. These nylons have a softer, lighter feel than regular department store nylons and are also less “sticky”.
Bottom with visible seams. Thigh highs that are sewn have the seam on the back part of the leg. Sometimes these can even be neon or metallic or studded with rhinestones.
Thickness. Thigh highs can be absolutely transparent or dark and thick in color. You may prefer a certain degree of opacity. If the bottom is for a formal event or to go with a jeweled dress, a completely sheer bottom with a shimmery finish will be fine.
Fishing nets. Stockings whose material is a wide-open woven knit are called fishnet because they resemble the net used to catch fish. If you want a fairly sparse bottom, a fence netting is one that has large gaps in the fabric and is usually threaded over a normal pair of bottoms.
Thigh highs are very susceptible to breakage and should not be handled roughly. In other words, tomboys and waders don’t mix. Be sure to file your fingernails and moisturize dry, chapped hands before putting on your stockings so the fabric doesn’t snag. You should hand wash and air dry your thigh highs. Sheer colored bottoms are best for day wear. Tights can run and pull very easily if you’re not careful and you’re likely to have to discard a pair after just one use.
Save an extra pair of thigh-high stockings for big nights. Add some thigh highs to your clothing budget. Getting snagged on the car door on your way out is a risk you need to take, and I guarantee the local convenience store doesn’t carry the leopard print sheers you picked out for tonight’s gala. By having another pair available, you will easily solve the problem. With stockings there is the added benefit that if one gets tore during a night out it is very easy to pack a spare and change it.
Thigh highs are designed for curvy, mature women, not just skinny teens. Thigh stockings are available for all body types, and even with compression features (if you have varicose veins). Don’t let anything get in the way of your thigh-high fun.
