Why "Skills" is an Important Section on Your Resume
Often actors overlook one of the most important parts of their resume, SKILLS.
We all know that experience, professional training and education are MAJOR – the main categories that tell the industry that you have what it takes to play a role. But WHY is it important to have a STRONG skills section?
Many roles, from commercials to movies, require some skill or the appearance of skill, talent, language, or artistic ability. It’s important that the casting directors and your agent know what you can comfortably do.
Athletic Skills – Golfing, swimming, diving, running
Kevin Costner really plays golf and has done a lot of his own shots in Tin Cup and the famous Johnny Weissmuller has dived off cliffs and been long underwater in jungle streams for all of the Tarzan movies. Paul Newman has driven race cars in film, as has Jason Statham in The Transporter. Many actors practice dangerous sports and stunts in their own projects. But for most action-adventure movies, there are replacements. For casting purposes, they still need to know that you are relatively fit and can move, run, and do “dangerous looking” things. If you play golf or tennis, bring your clubs and racquet to the audition and dress in your best golf shirt or Wimbledon tennis attire.
Dialects and Languages - If a movie or TV show is set in a different country or your character is from there, you need to sound authentic. Yes, Meryl Streep and even Robert DeNiro got expert voice coaching for certain roles to learn an accent or get rid of it, but it’s great if you’ve already mastered the dialects.
Musical talent – Singing, playing an instrument
Sometimes a character will sing, play guitar, or be in a rock band. Kris Kristofferson has sung and acted in more than one movie and of course Barbara Streisand has sung in Funny Girl and others. But not everyone remembers Meryl Streep singing the movie’s theme song, Amazing Grace in Silkwood. You could just be hired to sing the theme song or appear in the film as YOURSELF at a cabaret or nightclub.
World Traveler – Can you handle travel or have a passport?
So many movies are shot on location. If you have traveled there, you will be familiar with the language, the customs and will certainly have your passport. I’ve met actors who have had small roles in adventure movies because they’ve been on safari in Africa, surfed the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, and climbed the Himalayas.
Other hobbies or artistic activities
Do you have experience in watercolor painting, sculpture, gardening? These can be part of a character, so you’re more likely to be called upon to play them if you ARE a painter, sculptor, or have a real garden. You’ll even have the appropriate paint/mud splattered wardrobe for the audition!
Degrees in other professions – nursing, medical degree, MBA-business
These things will help them if they need someone on the set of a soap opera as an “advisor” and to speak the lingo/jargon of corporate videos and in-house training films.
How qualified do you REALLY need to be?
Never lie. Be competent but not necessarily professional in your skills or talent. For example, if you’re on a sailboat for a toothpaste commercial, you don’t need a “crew member”, but it might be better if you don’t get seasick easily, especially close-up.
If you have to play the piano for a coffee commercial, be able to do it for at least 8 bars. The entire ad is only 30 seconds long, so it won’t be necessary after that. (I say!)
If you state that you are “conversative or fluent” in a language that might be enough for a 30 second commercial or short scenes in a movie. Fluent means you’re really up to date.
Any other sport – bicycling for example – even if the movie is about a 3,500 kilometer bike ride, the Tour de France, you’ll probably have a replacement. You are hired as an ACTOR and not as a biker. Extras may need to be better than you or real pros.
If they want a gold medal Olympic athlete for the movie or TV series, they’ll probably hire one or have him stand in for your stunts while YOU act. So while you have to be “competent” in your sport or skill, you don’t have to be brilliant. Even Ingrid Bergman played no notes in her Oscar-winning role in Intermezzo where she played a concert pianist.
So add all your talents, skills, sports, languages, dialects and special “activities” – ballroom dancing to salsa and you could double your auditions and bookings!
